Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen (Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes) is an early opera by Richard Wagner in five acts, with the libretto written by the composer after Bulwer-Lytton's novel of the same name (1835). The title is commonly shortened to Rienzi. Written between July 1838 and November 1840, it was first performed at the Hofoper, Dresden on October 20, 1842, and was the composer's first success.

The opera is set in Rome and is based on the life of Cola di Rienzi (1313–1354), a medieval Italian populist figure who succeeds in outwitting and then defeating the nobles and their followers and in raising the power of the people. Magnanimous at first, he is forced by events to crush the nobles' rebellion against the people's power, but popular opinion changes and even the Church, which had urged him to assert himself, turns against him. In the end the populace burns the Capitol, in which Rienzi and a few adherents have made a last stand.

La leggenda di Sakùntala is a three-act opera by Franco Alfano, who wrote his own libretto, basing his work on a Kalidasa's 5th-century BC drama

Synopsis: Act I. The King encounters Sakùntala while hunting with his men near the remote woodland monastery where she lives. The King woos her, and overcoming her initial fear, promises that he will return, giving her a ring by which to remember him.

Act II. Daydreaming about the King, Sakùntala fails to hear the hermit Durvasas's entreaties to open the monastery's gate to admit him. Angered, he curses Sakùntala, proclaiming that the King would not remember her. Sakùntala begs a cloud to carry a message to the King. Harita returns to the monastery, and tells Sakùntala that she is with child.

Act III. The King is restless, and not entertained by the dancing girls who perform for him. Sakùntala arrives with her entourage, but when she attempts to present her ring of remembrance to the King, she realizes that she has lost it. The curse is fulfilled, and Sakùntala rushes out of the palace to drown herself in a lake. However, belatedly, a fisherman arrives, having found the ring, and presents it to the King, who suddenly remembers Sakùntala. Servants enter, bearing Sakùntala's infant child, and the King cries out in anguish. But Sakùntala's voice descends from heaven (having been taken up into the heavens by a cloud of fire), and tells the King not to despair, for their child will become the hero of the future age. All the people kneel and worship the infant.

The arrival of the legendary La Scala Opera Company to the Soviet Union in 1964, which had only  started opening up to the outside world, was truly a sensation!
The La Scala billboard bristled with big names, such as Renata Scotto and Gianni Raimondi, great masters known to Soviet opera lovers only by hearsay…
The Italians performed in the Bolshoi, whose opera company was then singing in Milan. The Bolshoi is Russia’s oldest musical theater and it was with a great deal of admiration that the masters of Italian bel canto mentioned the names of the legendary bass singer
Fyodor Chaliapin and ballerina Galina Ulanova who at various times graced the stage of the world-famous theater…
The Milan Company had brought along a program of Italian operatic evergreens, above all  by Giuseppe Verdi. Italy’s opera genius was born not far from Milan and spent most of his  life in the city. Even though Verdi failed his entry exams to the local conservatory, the famous La Scala later premiered many of his operas.
The other jewel of that night was the famous mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto. At only 29, she had already won big kudos in London, Paris and Mexico City and had spent the past few years shining on stage at La Scala. Her unique range covered even the soprano register, but when it came to the mezzo, she was surely second to none! And she certainly offered a  .textbook performance as Azucena in Il Trovatore, the part she also sang during a gala concert in Moscow…
Singing along with their world-famous colleagues during that tour were also a number of young, up and coming performers, such as Mirella Freni, a soprano. After only a year with La Scala, she was already singing lead parts, including a very moving performance as Liu in Turandot opera by Giacomo Puccini.
Mirella Freni performed Liu’s part also during the gala concert in Moscow to the expert piano accompaniment by Antonio Tonini, an undisputable authority on Italian opera who for many years advised La Scala’s singers.
Busy as their concert schedule was, the Italians still found time to see Moscow main sights. They were particularly impressed by the Kremlin which they said bore a striking resemblance to the famous Castello Sforzesco in Milan. Small wonder since the Moscow Kremlin was designed by Italian architects who modeled it on this very masterpiece of medieval architecture, including the shape of its towers and merlons.
The Italians gave a series of master classes at the Moscow Conservatory and a gala concert in the Conservatory Big Hall that was packed to capacity by people who always know a true artist when they see one…
After their 1964 Soviet premier, Las Scala and the Bolshoi Theater agreed an exchange program for talented Russian singers to hone their skills in Milan and gifted Italian ballet dancers to come to Moscow.
